Your compass is not pointing north

Vastu is defined against true north. Every compass — including the one in your phone — points at magnetic north instead. In Delhi those differ by about a degree, which is why the classical literature never mentions it. In Toronto they differ by ten degrees, in Auckland by twenty. A sector is forty-five degrees wide, so twenty degrees is nearly half a sector: enough to move a kitchen out of Agneya while the compass looks perfectly truthful.

Draw your plan once and take one compass reading. Every room is placed from that single number, corrected with IGRF-14 — so if the reading is out by a few degrees, the whole plan turns together and we can tell you which rooms that actually moves.

The eight sectors are the four compass directions and the four corners between them — Ishanya north-east, Agneya south-east, Nairutya south-west, Vayavya north-west — around the Brahmasthan at the centre, which is the one region that does not move when the plan turns.

Do you own it or rent it?

This changes what we are willing to recommend, not what we found. Nothing that needs a wall moved is offered to somebody who does not own the wall.

Which way does the plan point?
