A Hindu day runs sunrise to sunrise, so almost every date and timing on this calendar depends on your city — not on India. This is the only thing we need to start. A birth chart is a separate, skippable step.
The two conventions name the same day differently in the dark fortnight. Nothing else changes.
This resolves a handful of festival dates — Janmashtami and the Ekadashis above all.
